Rainforests of the World:
The rainforest is disappearing at an astonishing rate. Indigenous people destroy acres of rainforest at a time to create room for houses and grazing cattle. Commercial logging takes a large toll, as well as slash and burn techniques. The expanse of humans causes rainforests to lose 50,000 species a year. This is because when an acre of rainforest is lost, it’s inhabitants have nowhere to live. About 1.5 acres of rainforest is lost every second….yes, second. We have no time to lose. It’s time to take action.
Here are several facts about the rainforest:
Within the next 25 years, nearly half of the species on earth can be killed off or critically endangered due to rainforest destruction.
Over 120 prescription drugs come from the rainforest. They will be lost forever once it is destroyed.
We lose about 137 species of plants and animals a day. That’s just one single day.
More than 20% of the earth’s oxygen is produced in the rainforest.
One hectare (2.5 acres) may contain over 750 species of trees and 1500 species of plants.
Over 3000 fruits are found in the rainforest. The western world uses approximately 200.
Since there is still rainforest left, there is still time to save it. Please help by donating.
